Frequently asked questions.
Is my furniture worth reupholstering?
In most cases, the answer will be yes. If your furniture has been constructed with a sturdy frame, has lasted many years, fits your space well, and has been a good comfortable fit for you, then it is definitely worth reupholstering. This is especially true in the case of antiques or family heirlooms with sentimental value.
Would it be cheaper to buy new furniture?
Remember that saying, “You get what you paid for!”? There’s a reason it’s such a long-standing cliché! Re-upholstery can seem to cost a lot up front, but after considering the superior craftsmanship, longer lifespan, and higher quality that can be obtained through re-upholstery, it can certainly end up being more cost effective than buying new. When shopping and comparing, make sure to consider fabric quality as well as furniture construction quality. Many pieces available for sale are constructed poorly with low quality materials both inside and out.
May I supply my own fabric?
Yes, of course. We can work with your fabric, however, we do charge a $20 per yard COM (customer’s own material) fee. We also cannot be responsible for the condition or quality of your fabric. We do take the utmost care to provide you with the best possible results with the fabric that you provide. All COM fabrics are subject to approval before we will accept them for your project.
Do you supply fabric?
Yes we do! We carry a wide selection of wholesale upholstery fabrics, faux leather (vinyl) and genuine leather hides. We also maintain relationships with many major upholstery fabric supply companies including Covington, Fabric Tent, Maxwell Fabrics, The Fabric Co., Mitchell Fabrics, Norbar, Premier Prints, Sailrite, Unique Fine Fabrics, Charlotte, Pindler, Avant Garde, Kravet, Robert Allen, Roden Leather, Stout Textiles, Thibaut, Garrett Leather, Sunbrella, Crypton, Greenhouse Fabrics, and more. Stop by our showroom and check out our wide variety of sample books, or schedule an appointment with our Showroom Manager Cae (Shay) to work on your project together: 231-922-9925 or upholsteryalt@gmail.com
What type of fabric should I choose?
Every piece of furniture is different, and deserves it’s own unique style and fabric choice! Most of the fabrics we carry are upholstery grade fabric that will hold up, wear well, and last a long time. We also carry indoor/outdoor fabric the resists fading in the sun, as well as specialty/treated fabrics that repel liquids, resist stains, and hold up to life’s little accidents. We will happily assist and advise you as you search for the perfect fabric for your unique project and needs.
Do you tear down the furniture before you recover?
We take your furniture all the way down to the frame. After removing the fabric, we check the frame, springs, fillings, webbing and padding to see if anything is in need of repair. It is important that the frame is structurally sound before proceeding with any re-upholstery. We will notify you if repairs are needed beyond what was indicated in your project estimate.
How long does it take to re-upholster?
Our expected wait time varies depending on how busy we currently are in the shop and how many people are on the list before you. We will let you know what our current lead time is when we send you your estimate. Please visit our estimates page to request an estimate and begin your project conversation!
Can we replace the cushion and back inserts only?
Yes, of course! Replacing cushions inserts is one of the easiest ways to bring life back to your furniture when the cushions are not holding their shape or are no longer comfortable. We provide high quality foam inserts wrapped with Dacron fiber that gives a fuller more well-rounded look.
Can I change the style of my furniture?
Yes! Anything is possible with custom upholstery. Depending on the frame, there are many modifications we can make to update the look of your furniture. Changing skirt lengths, or removing them all together is a common alteration we perform. Tufting buttons may be added or removed. Changing the shape of the arms, legs, or upholstery style are also a few common modification options.
Do you provide a pick-up and delivery service?
Yes, we do! Our delivery/pick-up fee is $60 per hour per person. Most of the time we are able to send only one person, especially if there is someone at the home able to help load/unload, or if it is a smaller piece that one person can manage safely.
